"Madame Cheng," Original Mixed Media Painting on cradled panel by Juliana Coles
This is one of my favorite paintings ever! It was created for my “Pirate Queens: Piracy is a Feminist Act” 2018 solo Exhibition in Santa Fe, New Mexico at the Jean Cocteau Gallery. This ongoing series explores the stories of female pirates who have been, like women artists, disavowed from World History. Through my research I uncovered over 58 female pirates you have never heard of. Many of these women changed history. My purpose is to bring their amazing stories to light.
Madame Cheng; Pirate Queen: This 18th century pirate dared to take advantage of the rights, privileges and liberties exclusive to men becoming the most successful pirate of all time you’ve never heard of. Though disavowed from history and their stories of cunning and bravery largely untold, female pirates abandoned home & comfort to pursue freedom beyond society’s confines. In times of injustice the pirate takes her place in history; Piracy is a feminist act.
This painting combines figurative work with collage and hand written narrative based on extensive research to provide a glimpse into the daring life of Ching Shih. The sides are painted in my signature style that adds to the piratey feel.
The price was 4000.00- I removed it from my Etsy store because etsy takes over 10% and lowered the price to 3000.00, including shipping! The 3rd pic shows how the sides are painted.
